What is sin?

Short answer

Sin is anything — in action, attitude, or omission — that falls short of God's good design and separates us from him.

Deeper answer

The Bible's picture of sin is not mainly about a list of bad behaviours. It is about a deep disorientation: a heart curved in on itself, away from God and neighbour.

The good news is that Jesus came precisely for this. He doesn't shame sinners — he saves them.

From the Bible

  • Romans 3:23

    NIV
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
  • Isaiah 59:2

    NIV
But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
