Why did Jesus die?

Short answer

Jesus died to take on the consequences of human sin so that anyone who trusts in him can be forgiven and reconciled to God.

Deeper answer

From the outside, the death of Jesus looks like a tragic miscarriage of justice. But the New Testament insists it was the very plan of God — a deliberate act of love.

Sin separates people from God. Jesus, the only one without sin, willingly took the punishment that belonged to us. In his death, mercy and justice meet.

His resurrection is the receipt — proof that the debt was paid and that new life is now possible.

From the Bible

  • Romans 5:6–11
  • 1 Peter 2:24
